Quiet Drive Internal HDD Silencer

Quiet Drive 3.5” Internal HDD Silencer

Building on from the success of the Silent Box, Scythe have now released the new 3.5” Quiet Drive. This new hard drive enclosure offers better noise reduction properties than its predecessor at a cheaper price!

The reason the performance of the 3.5” Quiet Drive has increased compared to the Silent Box is because the 3.5” Quiet Drive uses a “Quadruple Core Structure”, QCS. The hard drive is first encased by aluminium plates. On the top an bottom of those plates two thick thermal pads are used to help transfer the heat away from the hard drive and onto the top and bottom of outer casing which is also made from aluminium. Scythe call this “Double Heat Diffusion Method”.

Around the inside edges of the outer casing is soft foam which reduces the vibrational noise generated by the hard drive. It also helps to quieten the high pitched whine that emits due to the spinning platters inside the hard disk.

On the outer of the casing there are four metal rectangles. These rubber mounted clips allow the Quiet Drive to be attached into a spare 5¼” drive bay, they also aid anti-vibration.

With the ability to virtually make any hard drive near-silent and given the fact the cooling properties of the enclosures mean it will cool any hard drive available up to and including 10,000 RPM hard drives, the Quiet Drive is an excellent hard drive silencing solution that needs serious consideration.

Reviews

  • Pro Clockers

The Quiet Drive is a pretty useful little enclosure that can provide its owner with some much needed quiet and a little bit more cooling.

  • Computer Active

Fitting the Quiet Drive is simple nuts-and-bolts work, and it had a dramatic quieting effect on the hard disk, reducing the amount of whirring and graunching to the merest murmur. It also reduced the amount of buzzing from the case, presumably because there was less mechanical vibration being passed to the case.

  • Windows Vista Magazine

The whirring of even the quietest hard drives can become noticeable when the rest of your PC is silent. This silencer surrounds your hard drive with a wall of metal and sound-absorbing material that also acts as a large heatsink, keeping your drive cool even under constant disc use. It screws into any DVD drive bay.

Best HDD silencer I've found.

,

Because it’s a full enclosure, I’ve found it so much more effective than other stabilisers. It’s a strong, insulated, rubber mounted box. I’ve not found anything better. I REALLY noticed the difference when I took the HDD out and discovered how noisy it was. Eliminating almost all of the high and low frequency noise it just does everything you want, and I just forgot it was there for so long.

I think it loses a star for having to take up a 5-1/4” bay, while my PC had a rack of empty 3-1/2” slots. I’ve got a lot of 5-1/4” devices and this isn’t a perfect solution if you are pushed for space. It loses a second star because fundamentally it’s just a box. It’s probably the best box you will find and if you want an enclosure I really recommend this one but an 8/10 score does fairly represent the fact that it’s a low tech solution.

At first I was apprehensive about heat/performance issues but I’ve not had any problems and am happy to be using this again now I’ve got space in my case.

Saved My Sanity !

,

The noise from my hard drives was driving me nuts, all that bumping and grinding (the hard drives are OK but the Antec case which hadn’t any form of noise/vibration dampening was acting like an amplifier). Now the hard drives are inside two of these Scythe cases mounted on rails in the 5.25 drive bays and they’re virtually inaudible. These are some of the best products I’ve ever bought from Quiet PC, they’ve extended the life of my PC case significantly. One slight criticism is that clamping down the outer case is a little fiddly because it’s a tight fit compressing the foam and rubber inside and the holes & screws which need to be aligned are very small, need to be careful to avoid screws going in cross threaded. Otherwise 100% delighted.
