Scythe Kabuto Quiet CPU Cooler

The new Kabuto CPU cooler is named after the Japanese samurai helmet and is the newest socket 1366 compatible Top-flow cooler developed by Scythe.

Kabuto is the decorative helmet of Japanese samurai and continues the number of successful Top Flow CPU Coolers from Scythe. The M.A.P.S. Heatpipe Structure which is already known by Mugen 2 which provides optimal efficiency thanks to the heatsink and the Slip-stream 120 mm PWM fan.

Top Mount Fan

The Slip Stream 120mm PWM fan mounted on top of the cooler is suited both to transport the heat of the CPU cooler away and to cool down sensitive components of the motherboard.

M.A.P.S. (Multiple Pass-Through Airflow Structure)

The newly developed M.A.P.S. (Multiple Airflow pass-through structure) is a completely new fin structure, where the airflow generated by the Scythe Slip Stream 120 mm PWM fan can be used perfectly.

4-Way Mounting

By orientating the fixing holes of the mounting clips in a square, users can mount the heatsink in four different ways.

Features

  1. Features MAPS (Multiple Airflow Pass-through Structure)
  2. Top down cooler, for addition motherboard cooling
  3. Supplied with a very quiet 120mm PWM fan
  4. Features six high performance heatpipes
  5. Socket LGA1366, LGA1156, 478, LGA775, AM3, AM2+, AM2, 754, 939, 940 compatible

Reviews

  • PC Gamer

Our current favourite third-party heatsink is the Scythe Kabuto. It’s good for overclocking and the flat design means it doesn’t stick out as far as others with comparative cooling power.

  • PC Format

It’s ideal if you have a side vent in your case, as it can expel CPU heat at right angles to the socket, without blowing hot air across other components to reach the traditional rear exhausts. Although it’s very quiet, the cooling properties are phenomenal. We managed to push our 2.6 GHz CPU just over the 3 GHz barrier, making our bargain chip even better value for money.

Customer Reviews

Very good, but mild buts ...

,

Clever design, nicely packaged, fair selection of fixings, overall almost excellent finish and quality and effectiveness. So quiet I now get more noise from the external PC case vibrating than from the fan itself but things are almost silent.

But(1) - very tight and fiddly to fit - best done whilst motherboard is out of the case, or in some instances that might be the only way of getting your hand under the heatsink to fix the clips, and

But(2) one of the fan blades was too long and kept hitting the outer fan body as it spun so rather than silence I got a loud tapping noise … But whatever that excess plastic was it soon wore itself off. If it had been worse I suppose I could have done something about it using sandpaper but a shame the fault was there at all.

Wouldn’t hesitate to buy again, if the case can accommodate it. I’ve an 8 or 10 or so year old Supermicro midi tower and am glad I didn’t go for an even larger heatsink/fan.
