Zalman ZM-M220W 22 inch Wide Trimon 2D/3D LCD monitor Ultra

If you’re a gamer, you might not believe your eyes! Zalman have announced a world first, a pair of affordable high-end LCD monitors supporting full 3D imaging. All you need to do is install the NVIDIA 3D driver, load up a compatible game, put on the supplied polarising glasses or clip-ons and be amazed! These monitors are compatible with loads of recent games with more being added to the list every week. They also works brilliantly in 2D mode for general purpose use and boast built-in audio to boot.

Windows XP Driver

The current Windows XP NVIDIA stereoscopic driver is version 91.31 and this can be downloaded from the NVIDIA website. It is compatible with all GeForce graphics cards with the exception of the 8800 and 9000 series. It is not expected that NVIDIA will provide any future updates to their Windows XP stereoscopic driver because all development work is now focussed on Windows Vista.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 Driver

NVIDIA have now released a new driver that supports all their graphics cards, but it will work only on Windows Vista and Windows 7 (not Windows XP). This driver is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems, and will work on all GeForce cards 6 series or higher configured in single or SLI mode. So if you want to play the latest games in glorious 3D then you will need these drivers!

TriDef DDD Driver

In addition to the NVIDIA 3D driver which is available free of charge from the NVIDIA website, Zalman are now endorsing a third-party 3D driver produced by a company called TriDef. The TriDef driver is unique in that it offers compatibility with both NVIDIA and ATI graphics cards, and universal Windows XP / 32-bit Vista support. As well as enabling 3D functionality in most popular games, it converts 2D movies and photos to stereoscopic 3D! A 14-day trial version can be downloaded from the TriDef website, and if you like it, you can buy it for US$49.99.

  • Adz Productions 6 minute video review

If you’re looking for a great screen to introduce you to the 3D world… this is most likely the screen for you.

  • alphr (was PC Pro)

We saw Painkiller running and the effect was certainly more immersive. Large objects and architecture benefit the most with walls looming towards you, but strafing around objects or enemies produced a strong sensation of 3D. Even little details like the HUD are improved, by being placed clearly in front of the rest of the action.

With polarising 3D glasses adorned and a copy of World of Warcraft on our screen, we were able to experience the thrills and spills of blue horned beasties coming at us seemingly through the screen itself!

  • Computer Active Magazine

Stereoscopic videos looked amazing. I resisted the temptation to try and touch the dragon fish in the coral reef or scream as the steam train thundered towards me. But only just!

Actually rather fantastic. You can see proper 3D effects coming out of the monitor - it really does work. I was astonished! There’s an incredible depth to it: quite gripping. Easy on the eye - no flicker - a lot nicer than 3D images I’ve seen in the past. It does have that wow factor.

3D games are a liberating experience - we still haven’t tired of seeing laser bolts fly towards our eyes, and we were genuinely surprised by just how good the whole effect is in the most suitable games. A 3D monitor that actually works.

In a nutshell, the TRIMON wins our Editors Choice award because of its wonderful innovative vision (I had to say it) and the effect it will have as it pushes the gaming and entertainment experience we have on our PCs to the next level.

A truly fabulous piece of technology. DVI and VGA are supported out of the box - in 2D mode, the ZM-M220W is no different from any other decent 22-inch screen. The new price point of £375 also means that you no longer need to re-mortgage your house in order for you to enjoy this realistic and impressive 3D technology.

Even in 2D mode it’s right up there thanks to a high contrast ratio and low response time. 82%
