If you are reading this you might already be aware that Scythe have previously released a CPU cooler called the Samurai. The original Samurai was a great success for Scythe, but it would not surprise us if this was the sole reason they decided to use the same name on their newest offering. The only similarities between the old Samurai and the new Samurai Z is the name. The new cooler looks nothing like its predecessor, as you can see from the image below.

One feature that seems to be down on the feature list with some manufacturers is ease of installation. This is where Scythe have exceeded all expectations with the Samurai Z. Scythe claim that you do not need any tools to install this cooler, regardless if you intend to install it on an Intel or AMD motherboard. The Extensive Mod Review states the following, "Scythe boasts that this heatsink uses a completely tool free design. This is, undeniably, 100%, true". Scythe have cleverly designed the base heatsink so it is possible to clip different retention brackets to it. These brackets make it possible to install the cooler onto the most popular CPU sockets, without having to remove the motherboard from the system.

This image shows the three different socket types the Samurai Z is compatible with. Along with a look at the base of the cooler.
When looking to choose a CPU there are many factors to consider. Here at quietpc.com one of the most important factors is noise, the quieter the better. The Samurai Z is not the quietest CPU cooler we stock but in contrast to a stock cooler it is very quiet indeed. Another important factor is performance, there is no point changing a cooler if it is going to result in higher CPU temperatures. The independent reviews mentioned to the right shows that not only does the Scythe Samurai Z perform far better than the stock coolers it is also much quieter.

UPDATE: The Samurai Z has now been upgraded to included compatibility with AMD's AM2 socket. The new name for the Samurai is predictably Samurai Z Rev.B!
