Scythe Katana 3 Quiet CPU Cooler
- Replaces the Scythe Katana 2 Heatpipe Quiet CPU Cooler| Katana 3 Quiet CPU Cooler [24 in stock, 40 more on order] | £21.73 (£25.53 inc. VAT) |
The word Katana is not only a name for a famous Japanese samurai but also for the well-known cooler series by Scythe. The Katana 3 presents a cooler which is based on technologies that have been developed and optimised over many years. Due to the slightly curved structure of the Katana 3, the virtually-silent 92mm PWM fan is not only used for the removal of heat from the CPU but also to cool down sensitive components on the motherboard.
Tool free installation
The smart and patent-pending mounting mechanism "VTMS" (Versatile Tool-Free Multiplatform System) allows mounting of Katana 3 CPU heatsink without using any tools.
S.P.S. (Slant Pipe Structure)
Already developed with the first Katana, the slightly curved shape of the Katana 3 allows both the direct heat transfer from the cooling fins of the cooler as well as an additional cooling of the motherboard components.
F.P.S. (Fast-Phase Structure)
The various cooling fins on the baseplate allow for additional heat dissipation and optimise the overall performance of the cooler without changing the compact dimensions of the entire system.

(8/10)
As noted by Tom, installation is a real fiddle - in my case (LGA 775 socket on ASUS P5Q-E) because the two push-pins under the fan side of the cooler are totally obscured to access from above. Instead, I had to move a lot of cabling plus RAM to squeeze my fingers in from the side!
Once completed, the fixing is secure and it was good to see that, unlike the stock Intel heat sink, this cooler's pad face completely covers the processor! Temp dropped 12deg C at idle and 8 deg C under load. The Scythe fan isn't much quieter than stock at max rpm. However, the cooler now doesn't need a fast fan speed - mine runs at ~800rpm to deliver 25 deg C at idle and 34 under load. My CPU TDP is 65w so this cooler is probably capable of being used passively...however I prefer to have some cooling breeze for the surrounding components.
Kit contains sachet of thermal paste too. Excellent value; well packed and speedy despatch. Thanks to Quiet PC for suggesting this economical cooler.
