The Scythe Mugen boasts their new Infinity Interleave Fin Structure (IIFS) for higher efficiency, four way mounting. It offers tool free installation and has five heatpipes in a U-shaped configuration. It also fits every desktop CPU socket type.
At 160mm tall the Mugen is enormous! Attached to the five U-shaped heatpipes are 58 aluminium fins. These fins provide the Mugen with a massive surface area which dissipates the heat from the CPU. Every alternate fin is shorter - Scythe call this IIFS (Infinity Interleave Fin Structure) and it is this structure that makes the Mugen a very efficient CPU cooler; so much so that it will cool any CPU currently on the market!
Installation of the Mugen is extremely simple. Just like the Samurai Z and the Miné, the Mugen uses VTMS (Versatile Tool-free Multiplatform System). This is one of the easiest mounting systems we have come across because no tools are required for installation. You do not even need to remove the motherboard from the system if your PC is already built.
The supplied 120mm fan runs at a fixed speed of 1200 RPM which produces only 23.5 db(A). This fan speed (and therefore noise) can be easily reduced with the aid of a RC56 if desired. This small resistor will reduce the speed to around 950 RPM which will take the noise level under 20 db(A). If you want more control over the fan speed, it also works perfectly with the Zalman Fanmate2. Our only word of warning is that if you have the fan speed set too low while using the Fanmate please be aware that the fan may not start due to the low amount of voltage supplied to the fan. Increasing the voltage on the Fanmate will solve this. This is also the reason we do not recommend using the RC100 with this fan.
